Paddy Power NHL

The National Hockey League – commonly known to most as the NHL – is the world’s top professional ice hockey league, played in the United States. Paddy Power provides coverage of all NHL games each season, giving punters the chance to bet on the sport from its beginning in October all the way through to the Stanley Cup Finals in June. Though there is less coverage of the sport compared to other American sports in the UK, punters can still access a wide range of markets to bet on the NHL when they use Paddy Power. How does the NHL work?

31 teams currently compete in the NHL with seven coming from Canada and 24 from the United States. The NHL works the same as most other major American sports, with the season being split into two parts – the regular season and the playoffs. Teams compete throughout the regular season to try and win a place in the playoffs, with all teams having to play through a gruelling 82-game regular-season schedule.

By the end of that, 16 teams will then contest the playoffs, with eight coming from the Eastern Conference and eight coming from the Western Conference. There are four playoff series in total, finishing with the Stanley Cup Finals which puts together the winners of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference. Each playoff series is contested in a best of seven games format, with the first team to win four games progressing through to the next round of the playoffs.

Teams also compete for home advantage during the regular season, with the team with the highest seed then playing four of the seven matches in their own arena. The Stanley Cup Finals are also competed over a best of seven series, with home advantage determined by the team with the most regular-season wins.

What NHL bets can I place with Paddy Power?

There are plenty of different NHL bets that can be placed when betting with Paddy Power, with all games being covered by the Irish bookmaker. Below, we have picked out the most popular bets that can be placed on Paddy Power and have broken down what each of them means.

Money Line

Money line refers to the end result of the match you are betting on, with a draw not being possible in the NHL. As a result, players have just two options to bet on within the money line, either backing the home team to win or the away team to win.

60 Minute Line

An NHL game is played over the course of 60 minutes and Paddy Power players can bet on the result of the match over the course of that time. Because this market does not include overtime like the money line, players are allowed to bet on the tie when they back a 60 minute line market, as well as choosing either a home or away win. Players that anticipate a game will be finished in 60 minutes can get greater odds on the 60 minute line than the money line.

Total Goals

Paddy Power also offer a market on the total number of goals that will be scored within a game. Paddy Power will set the line for the number of goals within the game themselves, leaving players to then decide whether they think it will be over or under that number.

Handicap Betting

To help increase your odds when betting on ice hockey, Paddy Power also allow you to partake in handicap betting when gambling on the NHL. This sees each team involved in the game either start with a deficit of goals or head start, depending on which side you go for. Paddy Power will give the money line favourites a disadvantage on the number of goals scored, while the underdogs are given a head start.

Double Result

Double result allows players to bet on who is winning their chosen game both at half time and at full time. There are nine different combinations that players can bet on when it comes to the double result and gives you increased odds compared to the other match result markets on Paddy Power, though it is more difficult to call.

60 Minute Winning Margin

Those looking to get even bigger odds within the 60 minute market can do so by betting on what they believe the winning margin their team will earn in the course of the game without including overtime. Players will generally have the option of betting on a team to win by one, two or three or more goals, as well as having the option of a tie.
